BEING LGBTQ+ IN NIGERIA: LEARNING FROM LIVED EXPERIENCES

This timely discussion will focus on recent events such as the resurgence of the EndSARS movement and Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act, where queer Nigerians are mobilising in the fight for change in post-colonial laws and legacy. Featuring personal stories from LGBTQI Nigerians, this important conversation is not to be missed.

MEET THE PANEL:

Tolu Osinubi (She/her) - Host

Job Title – Senior Manager (Consulting)

Organisation – Deloitte 

Tolu Osinubi is a Senior Manager at Deloitte who specialises in large scale technology delivery and digital transformation for global clients. Tolu is passionate about her work in the diversity and inclusion space, representing her various intersections of being Black, female and LGBTQ+ through her organisation of multiple education sessions internally and externally to the workplace. Tolu speaks on the topics such as the awareness of Intersectionality in the workplace and the Black experience in the UK. Tolu was recently featured on the OUTstanding future leaders list 2020 for championing diversity and inclusion in her workplace and beyond.

Timinepre Cole(She/her) – Panellist 

Timinepre Cole is a Lawyer specialized in Intellectual Property Law and a post graduate student at Bournemouth University. As a writer, her work explores the understated angles of the complex lives of women and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Alexandra Maduagwu(They/them) – Panellist

Alexandra Maduagwu is a non-binary creative who seeks to create meaningful experiences that change people’s behaviours. They’re a storyteller, creative entrepreneur, performer and organizer living in Lagos, Nigeria. After graduating from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, they worked in administration in the literary and art spheres and are now on a path to telling SOGIESC focused African stories.

In 2018, they cofounded JuJu Panafrican Limited, a cultural entity creating a community of socially conscious people through engaging content, Afrocentric handcrafted fashion, and memorable experiences.

Alexandra has worked with The Initiative for Equal Rights in Nigeria (TIERs) as a paralegal and spoken on panel discussions centred around Gender-Based Violence, Self-love, and Gender Identity and Expression. They were also featured in Defiance, a documentary about people from a new generation of Nigerian queer folk fighting for visibility and representation.

Mariam Sule (She/her) – Panelist

​

Mariam Sule is a writer, entrepreneur, communication strategist and an editor at Zikoko. Her work which centres on intersectional feminism, underrepresented minorities and the delicate intricacies of interpersonal communication dynamics has appeared in Aljazeera, Guardian NG, Litro UK, and elsewhere. She is a beneficiary of the Tony Elemelu Entrepreneurship Programme 2019 and one of the participants of the She Leads Africa Accelerator program 2019. She is the host and producer of ThePrideDiaries, a podcast exploring the lives of African queer folk in Africa and beyond. She is the recipient of The Freedom Awards' Activist of the year 2020.
